THE MAGIC LINE: Can you help us to help the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital?

Ziggurat aims to double our 2017 objective, which was € 1,000 (and we ended up raising 1,124€). This year we want to raise at least 2000€ (so far, we have raised 1,135€, so we’ve beat last year’s total, but still need more to reach our objective of 2,000€). Could you please donate 1€ or 2€ (or 5€) through the Ziggurat page on the Magic Line website?

NOTA: You can still donate at the following link: http://www.magiclinesjd.org/es/donar/31

English Daily Vitamin (January 2019)

Hoy hemos publicado la última Daily Vitamin del mes de enero. ¿Te has perdido alguna lección desde inicios del nuevo año? Te adjuntamos un resumen de todas ellas para que no pierdas ni una. Y al final del post incluimos un link al Activity Pack, un PDF descargable (que nuestros alumnos también pueden encontrar en la Biblioteca de nuestro Campus Virtual).

WORD OF THE YEAR

The last Daily Vitamin post of 2018 was the Oxford Dictionary 2017 Word of the Year, which was YOUTHQUAKE. We began 2019’s lessons by looking at the 2018 Word of the Year, which Oxford announced in December. The 2018 Word of the Year was TOXIC.

NEW ENGLISH WORDS

This first week of January we also did lessons about New English Words. These are words that have recently been added to the English dictionary.

GERUND OR INFINITIVE

In the lessons about Gerund vs. Infinitive we gave you a sentence and asked you to complete it with either a gerund (a verb ending in –ING) or an infinitive (an infinitive verb with TO).

CAMBRIDGE FCE READING AND USE OF ENGLISH, PART 2 (I)

In the Cambridge FCE Reading and Use of English, Part 2 lessons, we gave you a sentence with a blank and asked you to complete it with ONE word.

COMPOUND ADJECTIVES

And finally, we looked at Compound Adjectives. These are a combination of two words that create an adjective. We often use a hyphen between the two words to combine them into one phrase.

THE MAGIC LINE ON FEBRUARY 24th

In January we also announced our participation in the Magic Line fundraising event for the well-known hospital, Sant Joan de Deu. They work to help the most vulnerable people.

We ask you to donate money to the Ziggurat Magic Line team. All of the money you donate goes directly to the hospital. We have the goal to double our objective from 2017, which was 1,000€ (and we ended up raising 1,124€). This year we want to raise at least 2000€ before the day of the walk, on February 24th. Please, could you donate a euro or two (or five) through Ziggurat’s page on the Magic Line website: http://www.magiclinesjd.org/es/donar/31?

Thank you very much for your collaboration!

HOLIDAY SONGS
At the beginning of the month, we decided to get into the holiday spirit, so the first week’s theme was Famous Holiday Songs. We were looking at the vocabulary from different holiday songs.

BAD CHRISTMAS JOKES
That was the second week of holiday-related posts, and we were celebrating the season with a week of Holiday Jokes. One of the more difficult things to do in your second language is tell and understand jokes (no matter how good or bad they are).

WORD OF THE YEAR
We were looking at the Word of the Year for the past five years. Each year, Oxford Dictionaries announces the Word of the Year. This is a word or expression that (according to Oxford Dictionaries) “has attracted a great deal of interest over the last 12 months.” The word reflects the events or the emotions of the year.

We thought it would be fun to look at previous winners.

IDIOMS FOR BEING THANKFUL
Thanksgiving is a time when people reflect on what they have and what they are thankful for. To celebrate, we looked at idioms and expressions for being thankful.

CAMBRIDGE READING AND USE OF ENGLISH PART 4
You don’t have to be studying for a Cambridge exam to learn something or to participate! Part 4 of Reading and Use of English is a fun grammar and vocabulary challenge. Here’s how it works:

  1. You have two sentences. One sentence is complete. The other is missing words.
  2. You must complete the second sentence so that its meaning is the same as the first sentence.

For the First Certificate Exam, you can use 2-5 words. For the Certificate of Advanced English, they allow 3-6 words.

BULATS READING, PART 1, SECTION 4
You do not have to be studying for the BULATS to benefit from this week’s lessons: they are gap exercises that test your vocabulary.

VERB + PREPOSITION
Students so often say that they have issues with prepositions. We are focusing on Verb + Preposition Combinations.

OFTEN CONFUSED WORDS
We are concentrating on words that are often confused in English. We are presenting words that are very similar, which is why they are often confused. Sometimes the words sound the same; sometimes they are spelled similarly but are pronounced differently and have different meanings.

Y para repasar, podéis descargar el ACTIVITY PACK AQUÍ.

English Daily Vitamin (September 2018)

daily_vitamin_2016

Hello!

Hoy os dejamos el primer resumen de lecciones de la Daily Vitamin del año. ¡Empezamos con septiembre! If you missed a lesson, click on the relevant link below:

SPOT THE ERROR
Each day we are giving you a sentence in English and you must decide if the sentence is correct or not; if is it not correct, tell us what the mistake in the sentence is.

THE ADVERB EVEN
We are looking at different uses of the adverb EVEN.

BRITISH VS. AMERICAN ENGLISH
We are looking at some vocabulary differences between standard British and American English. It is common to have different words to describe the same thing in different dialects. One is not more or less correct, but it’s best to use the word that corresponds to the dialect of the place that you are in, to avoid miscommunication. You know the saying, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

Finalmente, ya tenemos disponible el pack de actividades de lecciones de julio y septiembre. Lo podéis descargar AQUÍ.

English Daily Vitamin (May 2018)

NEGOTIATION LANGUAGE
When negotiating, it’s common to use this pattern: (1) Show your understanding of a person; (2) Show (politely) that you disagree with this person; (3) Make a new offer that works for both people.

Each day, we focus on the language needed for this type of conversation

 PRESENT PERFECT
We have looked at Present Perfect several times because this is a tense many students have questions about. Each day of this week, we will look at a different way we use the Present Perfect.

 USEFUL ACRONYMS
An acronym is a word made from the first letters of other words. For example, EU is an acronym for the European Union, UK is the acronym for the United Kingdom and USA is the acronym for the United States of America.

THE MODAL MUST
We are looking at the modal MUST and the many ways we use this modal.
